Last days before election all about money

If money buys you love, hearts are pounding for Nancy Skinner.

Skinner is leading three other candidates in campaign contributions for the 14th Assembly District race up for grabs on Tuesday.

Skinner, an East Bay Regional Park District member and former Berkeley City Councilwoman, has raised $279,250 with just a few days to go before the election, according to records filed with the California Secretary of State's office.

The district represents voters in Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Kensington, Richmond and portions of Oakland as well as Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette and part of Pleasant Hill.

There are no Republicans running in the primary.

Fellow Democrats running against Skinner are Richmond City Councilman Tony Thurmond, Berkeley resident Phil Polakoff and Berkeley City Councilman Kriss Worthington.

The four candidates are vying for the seat of Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, who has reached her limit of six years.

Running just behind Skinner in campaign contributions is Polakoff with $245,088. Polakoff loaned his campaign $50,000 on May 16, records show.

Tony Thurmond has raised $224,362 so far and Worthington trails the pack with $149,171. Worthington loaned his campaign $20,000 on Thursday.
